The visa application must be submitted using the official form no earlier than three months before the planned travel date, either in person or through an authorized representative, except in cases of humanitarian reasons.

Completing the Visa Application

All fields must be completed legibly in block letters. Names must be written in Latin letters (as recorded in the passport). The remaining information must be filled out in English or Bulgarian. The application must be signed personally by the applicant. Family members of EU citizens are required to fill out only those fields in the visa application that indicate their family relationship.

Additional Requirements for Minors

Health Insurance Requirements

Health insurance must be valid for EU member states for the entire travel period, covering all costs for repatriation, urgent medical care, and emergency hospital treatment for the duration of the visa. The insured amount must be no less than €30,000.

Residence Permit

After arriving in Bulgaria, students must apply for a residence permit. Here's what you need to know.

Residence Permit Application

After arriving in Bulgaria with your Type “D” visa, you will need to apply for a residence permit. Professional Academy Ventures will assist you with this process, which includes:

  • Completing an application form in Bulgarian. The form requires details such as: applicant’s parents’ and children’s full names, applicant’s full name, nationality, date and place of birth, national ID/passport details, and reason for requesting the permit (student type D visa).
  • For EU students: two copies of their passport or personal ID.
  • For non-EU students: two copies of their passport used for entry into Bulgaria, including photocopies of pages with the last Bulgarian entry stamp. The passport must be valid for at least 1.5 years after the ID card application date. A valid passport must be shown at the Migration Office.
  • For non-EU students: a copy of the Visa with which they entered Bulgaria.
  • For returning EU and non-EU students: a copy of their Bulgarian ID card.
  • Submitting a declaration for address with proof (e.g., rental contract).
  • Providing a translated European health insurance card or other valid health insurance.
  • Submitting a document from Medical University – Pleven confirming tuition payment and status as a regular student.
  • Providing a certificate from a local bank confirming an opened account with the required deposited amount.
  • Submitting an enrollment certificate in Bulgarian issued by the Medical University.
  • For non-EU citizens: payment of a residency fee at the bank in the Migration Office.

Important Note for Non-EU Citizens: Non-EU citizens must also submit a certificate showing no previous conviction, legalized by an Apostille and accompanied by an official translation into Bulgarian. The Type “D” visa typically has a duration of 180 days. Residence permit documents must be submitted at the police station 14 days before the visa’s expiration date, as the permit takes about 14 days to be issued.
